Data Deduplication for Nearline Storage
Deduplicated snapshots bring extreame efficency to the latest OS 4.3 release
Brampton ON — January 7th, 2008 — Open Storage Solutions® Inc., a leader in providing data storage solutions in Canada and the US today announced the availability of a new version of the Data Domain file system software that significantly broadens system support for a wide range of nearline workloads and use-cases beyond its core data protection markets. Unlike traditional nearline systems using SATA/RAID or tape, or niche solutions such as VTL or CAS, Data Domain systems provide unified, deduplicated, self-protecting storage for the broad spectrum of nearline applications.
"With the new Data Domain OS 4.3 release, our customers have an opportunity to deploy deduplication storage more broadly as a storage tier for nearline file storage," said Andrew Betterton, President and CEO of Open Storage Solutions. "Backup, disaster recovery and long term retention of enterprise data for reference, litigation support and regulatory compliance are some of the ideal applications of this enhanced storage tier."
The new software release features file system enhancements such as integrated, deduplicated snapshots for extreme efficiency, deduplicated snapshot replication, and support for the many millions of files required by these applications. Based on Data Domain's high-speed deduplication, the new software release will continue to provide the same award winning support for backup and recovery that has won Data Domain customers worldwide, only now, it can be shared by many more applications.
Data Domain has qualified its systems with leading archive applications including CommVault's Data and Email Archiver, EMC's DiskXtender and EmailXtender, as well as Symantec's Enterprise Vault.
"We believe that Data Domain is an excellent solution for storing what we call persistent data, which is data that is rarely changed," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "The end users we talk to have 60 to 80% of persistent data residing on their primary storage. Moving persistent data from primary storage to a space efficient and easy to manage storage system provides extreme value including reducing capital costs, extending retention periods, and addresses power, cooling and floor space issues. Data Domain has been doing this all along with backup and now they have extended their reach to other applications and have added important features such as snapshots to provide greater value. This move opens up whole new markets for Data Domain."
"Deduplication is a 'Storage Fundamental,' " said Frank Slootman, president and CEO of Data Domain. "By broadening our application support to embrace the spectrum of nearline applications, customers can leverage their Data Domain deduplication storage systems to achieve new management efficiencies and cost savings by consolidating their nearline storage infrastructure."
"CommVault's history of partnership with Data Domain enables our enterprise customers to experience best-in-class data management solutions and the peace of mind that their business-critical data is highly available, reliable and secure," said David West, CommVault's vice president of marketing and business development. "With Data Domain's new support for nearline storage and deduplication technologies combined with the CommVault SimpanaTM software suite, our mutual customers can optimize and simplify data backup, archive and content search for greater business value."
Data Domain OS 4.3 release upgrade is available now at no charge to all supported DD4xx and DD5xx systems.
